Lisa Johnston Releases New Ad, Challenges Voters to Break the Cycle
Overland Park, Kansas — October 20, 2010 – Amidst the climate of concern about the quality of leadership in Washington, Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Lisa Johnston released her third TV ad for the general election, “Breaking the Cycle”. A Gallup poll from July of this year revealed that only 11% of Americans have confidence in the U.S. Congress. In the ad, Johnston notes this dissatisfaction and asks the question, “Does it really make sense to send a Congressman back to Washington as a Senator?”
“This election should not be about political affiliation” said Lisa. “What matters most is not the letter beside your name, but if you are the right person for the job. We need to focus on where candidates stand on the important issues and who is willing and able to represent the interests of the people. We must break the cycle of sending the same people to Washington and getting the same results — we need a fresh perspective.”
“Currently elected officials come with a lot of baggage. Washington insiders have strong connections and relationships to lobbyists, corporations, and wealthy influential donors. Influential supporters expect attention and favors. These dynamics interfere with true representation for everyday people. We need leaders who are in a position to act in a fashion that benefits everyone they represent, not just a privileged few.”
“As a political and Washington outsider, I am a clean slate and have no baggage following me to the U. S. Senate. I have no interest in cultivating relationships with those who expect special favors that advance their personal interests in exchange for the promise of the financial support for future campaigns. These unholy alliances prevent true representation for the people and shackle the decision-making process of elected officials. I would rather serve one term doing the right thing and leading with integrity than to be re-elected repeatedly but not have the freedom to vote my conscience and represent the people.”
“Those who routinely benefit from politics as usual will be very unhappy with my unwillingness to grant special favors or make back room deals. But, to paraphrase a famous literary character: frankly, I don’t give a damn.”
“We have an important question facing us in November. Do we want to remain stuck in the past perpetuating politics as usual or do we want to break the cycle and choose new leaders who want to make a real difference for our nation and give the people their voice in Washington? I hope the majority of Kansans will join with me on November 2nd to move toward a new era of leadership by casting their ballot for me, Lisa Johnston, as their next U.S. Senator.”
