Lisa Johnston, Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate, Releases Commercial Debunking the Fair Tax

Overland Park, Kansas — October 7, 2010 – Flying in the face of pundits who claim that Democratic candidates are never willing to discuss taxes in an election cycle, Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate, Lisa Johnston, has released her first general election television ad entitled “Unfair Tax”.

“I strongly oppose the so-called “fair tax” plan sponsored by my opponent, Congressman Jerry Moran” said Lisa. “A 23% national sales tax would force many middle class families and retirees to pay substantially more tax than they do today. Additionally, this tax could place some necessities out of the reach of everyday Kansans and impact on our economy negatively when consumers are unable to buy these items. For example, taxes on a $25,000 new car would increase by $5,750. Tax on this one purchase is nearly equivalent to the total yearly federal income tax currently paid by a family of four making $70,000. Not only does this approach hurt everyday Kansans but we also cannot afford to jeopardize our economy which has not yet fully recovered from the consequences of eight long years of charge and spend practices during the Bush administration.”

“Either Congressman Moran and others who support the fair tax plan do not truly understand the ramifications of such a plan for everyday Kansans and the economy or they understand the implications but do not care because they are focused on protecting the interests of wealthy individuals who support their campaigns. Neither of these explanations is acceptable. Kansans deserve leaders who are looking out for the best interests of the people of our state, not politicians who either do not know or do not care that this change would hurt retirees, working families, family farmers, and small business owners.”

“It is disappointing that in our country today we often are given quick sound bites that lack any substance. If people knew the whole truth about many proposed plans they would be outraged. If a candidate for office said ‘I want to change to a tax system that would place additional burdens on everyday Kansans but give significant tax breaks to wealthy individuals’ they would undoubtedly lose the election. So, instead of letting the cat out of the bag, politicians working on behalf of wealthy individuals, corporations, and special interests use crafty language and nice sounding names for plans that would hurt everyday people in order to trick them into supporting their candidacy and these damaging plans. This is unacceptable.”

“We need to demand more integrity from our elected officials. Voters should be given the details about any proposed legislation so they have the opportunity to provide feedback and cast their vote based on facts. One of my priorities is to ensure that straightforward, plain language summaries of all potential legislation are available to voters so that we can end the political gamesmanship of hiding behind legal jargon or misleading statements with no substance. Put simply, Kansans deserve the truth.”
